How should I express this?
What happens when designers of the future use works of art as basis for their designs? In the Sauma/Seam-exhibition, students’ physical and digital clothes, patterns and jewellery are in dialogue with the art museum’s collections. The exhibition seamlessly showcases both newer relevant acquisitions as well as older works from the collection.
Seam – Fashion in Art, Art in Fashion – is the display of Savonia design students’ skills, which opens up the world of contemporary fashion and design and its processes. The designers were inspired by the works in the collections and architecture of Kuopio Art Museum. Visual arts have always taken inspiration from dress, fashion and its phenomena – and vice versa. Whether the clothing is carefully planned or seemingly less so, it’s constantly a part of self-expression and taking a stance. Dressing is the visual voice of identity.
With this collaborative project, the art museum presents an unusual exhibition, which explores the intersection of art and design through experientialism and senses, future and time, selfhood and power. Kuopio Art Museum’s collaboration with Savonia University of Applied Sciences reaches all the way to exhibition architecture, display design, event production and customer service; some of the art museum staff will dress in the clother designed specially for them.
